Tinkercad alternatives in 2026: what to pick and why
Tinkercad is excellent at what it does: a first contact with 3D, in a classroom, in ten minutes. The trouble starts the next day, when you want something more serious and hit its walls. Here is what comes next, depending on what you are making.
Where Tinkercad stops
This is not a complaint, it is a design choice: simplicity has a price. The missing pieces are the same for almost everyone.
- No editable parameters after building — you start over when a dimension changes.
- Holes are made by grouping with 'hole' objects, not by real boolean operations.
- Rendering is nearly absent: you cannot show a result to a client.
- No architecture tools: walls, openings, slabs, 2D plans.
- No offline or self-hosted use.
If you want architecture and massing
SketchUp Free is the best known, easy to learn, with a huge model library. The free tier limits you to the browser, few export formats and no serious rendering.
GrafitGo takes another route: the building is generated from parameters (width, depth, floors, rooms), with real openings in walls, a vector 2D plan, a 1:1 walkthrough and sun-accurate rendering. It can also run entirely on your own machine.
If you want precise mechanical parts
Onshape is real parametric CAD in the browser, with a feature history and sketch constraints. It is free for public documents — meaning anyone can see your models. Private work costs money, and not a little.
FreeCAD is free and complete, but it installs locally and has a steep learning curve. Worth it if you make parts often.
If you want beautiful images
Blender does everything and is free, but it is not CAD: millimetre-precise modeling is awkward, and learning it is a project in itself, not an afternoon.
For a presentation image starting from simple massing, an editor with built-in rendering is faster: no export, import, redoing materials and re-lighting.
How to choose, briefly
- A child or a first 3D lesson: Tinkercad, no argument.
- A house, a room, an interior, a plan: GrafitGo or SketchUp.
- A mechanical part with tolerances: Onshape or FreeCAD.
- Artistic imagery, characters, animation: Blender.
- A printable part without fuss: Tinkercad at first, GrafitGo when you want parameters and controlled wall thickness.
Can I import a model from Tinkercad?
Yes. Export STL or OBJ from Tinkercad and open it directly. The imported model stays a triangle mesh — it does not regain parameters, but you can cut, join and export it further.
Is there anything completely free with no account?
GrafitGo opens and works with no account; you only need one to save projects to your library and open them from another computer.
